Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate SIM card for a global satellite phone?
Most models require a SIM card which may be included or purchased separately depending on the vendor. Check the product details to confirm if a SIM is included with your purchase before buying.
Can a satellite phone work indoors?
Satellite phones need a clear view of the sky to connect so indoor use is usually limited or impossible. Moving to an open area near a window is recommended for reliable connections.
Are there extra costs beyond the phone price?
Yes most devices require an active airtime plan or prepaid minutes for calls and texts. Always check the service fees and plan options before finalizing your purchase.
How long does the battery last?
Battery life varies by model but standby times often reach up to 160 hours while talk times are typically between 3 and 8 hours. Check specs for your specific use case.
Do these phones cover polar regions?
Only Iridium phones offer true global coverage including the poles. Other networks like Inmarsat and Thuraya exclude polar areas from their service footprints.
What should I do if my phone gets wet?
Even weather resistant phones should be dried thoroughly before use. Remove any accessories and let the device air dry completely to prevent damage or corrosion.
Can I send SMS messages with these phones?
Yes most satellite phones support SMS texting which is often cheaper than voice calls. Check the plan details to confirm messaging rates and limits.
How do I know if I have a signal?
Look for signal bars on the display which indicate satellite strength. If there is no signal try moving to a more open area and rechecking.
